Adhesive Rink Floors

Adhesive Floors are designed specifically for concrete floors that still have structural integrity, but are void of an operational rink piping system.

The Adhesive Floor design involves encasing new, small diameter pipe into a 2" special concrete pour which is actually bonded, and permanently anchored to the existing floor. In this arrangement, no vapor barriers or insulation is used.

The process begins with the preparation of the existing floor by sand blasting, acid etching, or shot blasting to create a porous condition. Any existing cracks or deformations would be "v" cut, filled with epoxy, and covered with a structural fiberglass mesh tape. The epoxy in the crack, combined with the tape, will help prevent the cracks from the lower slab mirroring through the new slab.

After the floor has been properly prepared, the smaller diameter tubing is rolled out onto the floor and adjusted for a proper fit. Extra care is used to stagger the spacer strips between the mats to avoid creating weak spots. After the complete installation of the rink piping, a 3"/3" x 10/10 wire is laid over the tubing and anchored into the existing concrete floor. The purpose of the mesh is to hold the tubing tightly into position while also adding upper structural strength to the concrete to avoid surface cracking. After a final pressure check and the subsequent fluid charging of the piping system, the floor is ready for the concrete.

Just prior to placing the very high strength concrete mix, a bonding agent is sprayed through the tubing to provide a complete coating over the lower slab. The bonding agent application is timed to keep no more than 30 minutes ahead of the concrete placing and finishers. The concrete is placed in the same fashion as a conventional 5" slab with extra care given to levelness. After placement, the slab is covered for at least 14 days with a vapor barrier.

If dasherboards were not built for portability, the Adhesive Floor System can be installed without removing them. Minor adjustments as to the thickness of your kickplate will need to be made. Becaue the rink floor will shrink approximately 1" in length, and 1/2" in width, thicker kickplate will allow the slab to shrink while still providing a conditon where the refrigerated slab extends beneath the dasher kickplate. This will assure that good quality, refrigerated ice is maintained directly to the dasherboards without gaping.

Why you should consider an Adhesive Floor System

For concrete slabs without rink piping:

  • Converts floors to a multi-purpose ice rink floor

  • Generate revenue

  • Eliminates need excavate existing floor and installing a costly 5" thick concrete slab

For concrete slabs with failed piping:

  • Keeps rinks multi-purpose

  • Eliminates need excavate existing floor and installing a costly 5" thick concrete slab

  • No need to remove existing piping

  • Existing piping can be capped

  • No hazardous waste issues to contend with

  • Piping system can be hooked up to existing indirect refrigeration plant
